蟑螂在香港非常普遍, 牠們習慣在夜間活動, 這種扁形昆蟲白天藉著扁平身型躲在縫隙中, 晚間外出覓食. 最常見的品種有喜居於溝渠等戶外的美洲蟑螂和室內廚房等的德國蟑螂.
蟑螂喜歡群居於溫暖，潮濕的地方，喜黑怕光，晝伏夜出，嗅覺及觸角器官特別發達．生命力極強,
德國蟑螂可存活6-9個月, 而美洲蟑螂更可生存24-30個月. 每年可生產二十至四十隻卵囊，每一卵囊有十六至三十隻蟑螂不等．
蟑螂傳播細菌病毒，對公眾衛生構成極大威脅．
因蟑螂對滅蟲藥物會產生抗藥性，固在防治時要特別關注此一特性，需定時更換藥劑以達至最佳效果．
