白蟻乃昆蟲社會中最複雜及極具侵略性的, 白蟻可分為工蟻, 兵蟻及專事生產的蟻后, 蟻王. 牠們一般利用泥土中 的微粒及棑洩物來建築隧道以防衛之用, 牠們會在灰泥, 木材之間的裂縫中製造通道以連接巢穴和覓食的地方, 牠們會深入堅固的物料, 如木地板, 間隔牆, 橫樑, 木地台, 傢俱, 書本等, 引致嚴重的損害.

防治方法多以使用具殘留性藥液或白蟻餌誘藥. 視乎實際情況及環境, 決定最適合的防治方法.

Termites have been around for over 250 million years. They are one of the most sophistication and dangerous of all insect societies. They live colonies in which are usually located in ground or in wood. They are feed on cellulose from wood and wood by-products such as paper; some tropical species feed on fungi, carrion, etc.

Termites have three castes: worker, soldier and reproductive. Workers maintain the colony, construct and repair the nest, forage and feed the colony. Soldiers have only one function, to protect the colony. The primary reproductives are the king and queen. They mate periodically, and the queen may live up to 30 years or even longer. A mature queen can lay as many as 1,000 eggs per day.

 Termites are usually divided into 3 groups based on the location of their colony: the subterranean, the drywood and the dampwood termites. In Hong Kong, the most commonly found termite is subterranean. They will build numerous tunnels to protect themselves by using fine particles of soil. They can make way through cracks in  mortar, brick and wood between the nest and the source of food. They can also penetrate small holes in concrete causing severe destruction.

Termiticides or termites bait station will be used for the control of termites depend on the situation of infestation.
